Valentine Antique Gallery - Vaseline

Vaseline glass, or uranium glass as some call it, was first produced in the 1840's. Vaseline glass will glow when it is placed under a black light. The ingredient which makes the glass glow is uranium. The degree of the glow is determined by the amount of uranium the glass contains. Even though a piece may shine brightly, the amount of uranium in vaseline glass is not harmful. Due to the current regulations on uranium, vaseline glass is produced in very limited quantities today. During WWII, production was halted until the ban was lifted in 1958. Vaseline glass was most popular during the Victorian period, and it was manufactured by many of the well-known glass companies .
